Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been shut down by the school's management.
This follows a protest over the death of Adesina Omowumi Aishat, a student at the institution, whom students blamed on medical negligence.
According to a press release by the university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, the school management condemned the students' protests, which culminated in unbridled brigandage, blocking of the Ife/Ibadan and Ife/Ede highways as alternative routes, and engaging in acts that are detrimental to their health and the safety of the general public.
The deceased had gone to the school's Health Center on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, with signs and symptoms of a serious infection, which were swiftly treated with prescribed drugs, and she was then asked to return as an outpatient.
The 24-year-old student returned to the Health Centre on Thursday, September 30, and was referred to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital for additional treatment, where she died, according to the statement.
The University had exhausted all necessary avenues to bring the students to order and allow for normalcy to return to the campus, according to Olanrewaju, who added that the management understood the pain that had occurred from Aishat's tragic death.
"The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, have accordingly closed down the school until further notice," the statement reads in part. This is to prevent more law and order breakdowns.
"As a result, all students are required to depart their residence halls and the campus by 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 2, 2021."
"As a result, the swearing-in of the newly elected Students' Union officials has been postponed while the incident is investigated."
"In the meantime, the University administration has put in place the machinery to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crisis's immediate and remote causes."
According to a university representative, the administration expresses its condolences to the deceased's parents, friends, colleagues, and all University students, and prays for the soul's repose.
