Hermelinda Simela, a well-known Mozambican actress, dies shortly after giving birth.
The award-winning actress and producer died in a hospital after problems during childbirth, according to the BBC.
Simela's longtime friend and colleague Alvim Cossa told the BBC, "The country lost a strong, resilient woman, an excellent mother, and, above all, an engine of our ambitions."
“Hermelinda supported the performing arts community and provided opportunity for actors to succeed.”
For her portrayal in Virgin Margarida, Simela won best supporting actress at the 2013 Africa Movie Academy Awards.
Her death came just a week after the funeral of Shona Ferguson, a Botswana-born performer and producer who died in South Africa from Covid-19-related problems.
