Mueller, according to sources, had been suffering from Alzheimer's for several years and was being cared for in a Bavarian nursing home.
In a November interview, Mueller's wife, Uschi, claimed, "He eats nearly nothing because he can hardly swallow food, remains in bed for almost 24 hours and has only a few awake moments."
‘When he's awake, it's extremely amazing because he can communicate yes or no by blinking his eyes.' We must only feed him pureed foods.
‘I've squandered years that could have been beautiful and valuable. It's for Gerd's sake that I'm doing it. Because he was such a nice person. Funny and amusing. And he has been quite helpful to me. I feel compelled to join him.'
Mueller is widely recognized as one of Germany's all-time best strikers, having helped his country win the 1974 World Cup and the 1972 European Championship.
In 62 appearances for West Germany, he scored 68 goals and was the tournament's top scorer in both the 1972 European Championship and the 1970 World Cup.
Mueller made 607 games for Bayern Munich, scoring 566 goals and helping the club win four Bundesliga crowns and three European Cups.
With 365 goals, he still maintains the Bundesliga record for most goals scored.
Mueller also has the distinction of being Bayern's all-time leading scorer.
