After being extensively linked with a move to Manchester City just hours before, Ronaldo sealed a spectacular comeback to United on Friday August 27.
Since his arrival at the club, there has been discussion about which number he should wear next season, with Edinson Cavani presently wearing the No 7 shirt.
The Premier League has now awarded the number to both players, in an odd turn of events.
The Premier League Handbook for the 2021/22 season states in Section M Players' Identification and Strip: 'Before the start of each Season, each Club shall assign an unique shirt number to each member of its first team squad.'
'A Player shall have his shirt number throughout the Season for which it was assigned as long as he remains with the Club.'
Despite rumors that players must keep the shirt number they are registered under unless they leave the club or are granted'special dispensation,' Cavani has yet to make an appearance for the Red Devils this season, so it's unknown if he has turned it over to the Portuguese star.
Ronaldo joined the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham as a famous No 7 for United during his first tenure there. He's worn the number for both Real Madrid and Juventus ever since.
