Popular Nigerian Footballer Dies At Age 35


Samuel Oji, a British-Nigerian footballer, has passed away at the age of 35.

He was thought to be battling an ailment.

Oji began his career as a teenager at Arsenal in 2000, but after failing to make the grade, he moved to Birmingham in 2004.

During his career, the defender, who is the cousin of English singer Lemar, also played for Doncaster Rovers, Leyton Orient, Bristol Rovers, and Hereford United.

Oji was most recently an assistant manager at Midland League Premier Division side Highgate United, which plays in the English football's ninth division.

Since the shocking news of his death, tributes have poured in for the centre-back.

“All it is with a very heavy heart that I am terribly heartbroken to inform you that our great Captain, Leader, and Legend Samuel Oji has sadly died away,” Highgate United said in a statement.

“Everyone at Highgate United FC is thinking about Sam's wife, children, and family at this difficult time. Oji, rest in peace.”

They also wrote in another tweet:

“Throughout the day, numerous comments on Samuel Oji's well-being have been posted on social media.

“Sam is gravely ill, but he continues to battle like the warrior he is.”

Leyton Orient tweeted after learning of his death:

“We are profoundly grieved to learn about the passing of former footballer Sam Oji.

“At this terrible moment, our thoughts are with Sam's loved ones. Sam, may you rest in peace.”

Birmingham City posted on Twitter:

“The club is heartbroken to learn of the death of former player Sam Oji, who was 35 years old.

“Everyone at #BCFC is thinking of Sam's family and friends during this tremendously difficult time.”
