AFCON 2021: Senegal Defeat Egypt On Penalties To Win Trophy For The First Time

Senegal has won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in their history.

The Teranga Lions beat Egypt 4-2 on penalties in the final on Sunday.

Both teams failed to score after 120 minutes of football.

Senegal took the lead when goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made a fourth-round save, and Liverpool star Sadio Mane scored the winning penalty kick.

The triumph marked Senegal‘s first ever AFCON crown.

The final's drama started very immediately, as Egypt's Mohamed Abdelmonem conceded a penalty just four minutes into the game. However, goalkeeper Mohamed Abougabal made up for his defender's blunder by stopping Mane's penalty kick and keeping the game scoreless.

And it would stay that way for the next 90 minutes. Abougabal made five saves in normal time, while Mendy added two of his own, as the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
After another half-hour of play failed to produce a goal, the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations final was to be decided by a penalty shootout.

Another Abdelmonem mistake would have cost Egypt dearly. The 23-year-old Al Ahly midfielder hit the post in the second round of shooters, giving Senegal the lead. But Abougabal came to his team's rescue once again in the third round, save Bouna Sarr's attempt, and Marwan Hamdy's conversion leveled the score once more.
And it was Mendy, the 2022 FIFA The Best award winner, who changed the game's trajectory in the fourth round, save Mohanad Lasheen's shot to put Senegal back in lead. Mane returned to the spot two hours and 40 minutes after having a penalty saved in the first half, and tucked home the winner with a right-footed attempt.
