Temilade Openiyi, popularly known by her stage name Tems, is a singer-songwriter from Nigeria who has said that she once had to steal food to survive.
She said this as she described her prior hardships, noting that at the time, she had little money and felt hopeless.
Tems stated during an interview with GQ magazine that she used to go see her aunt to pick up meals to bring home.
"There were moments when I wasn't simply poor; I was poor and despairing," she recalled. I once stole food. I used to just visit my aunt's place to get meals to take home from her.
"I simply thought, 'What's the point of my being here right now?'" You must keep such moments in mind. mostly because they are no longer around.
In addition, Tems revealed that in the year she produced "Mr. Rebel," she was financially strapped, living alone, and under pressure to support her family.
She left her work to concentrate on music, which made matters more difficult because she would no longer be able to meet everyone's needs due to the lack of a secure, permanent career.
The Try Me singer said that in order to realize her goals of having a prosperous music career, she had to embark on a path of self-discovery and growth.
"I took the choice to stop thinking of myself as "this person who can never be anything" and to stop wallowing in melancholy.
I didn't have any self-esteem, Tems continued. I didn't believe I was attractive. My voice was nothing to me, not even a thought. There are so many individuals who can sing, and even if I'm not a model and can't dance, I'll take whatever opportunity I can get. I'll be the finest under-the-bridge singer ever, even if I do eventually end up performing elsewhere.
