Amina Hassan, 20, has been taken into custody after she reportedly set her husband's home on fire in retribution for his claimed unwillingness to give her a divorce.
The tumultuous events unfolded just five weeks after their wedding in the town of Shuware, Mubi North local government area.
Amina said there was a pre-wedding agreement with her husband, Muhammad Auwal, for him to divorce her soon after their marriage ceremony, according to Police Public Relations Officer Suleiman Nguroje.
She went to Auwal with the request, but he allegedly refused and started beating her instead.
We agreed that following their marriage, he would file for divorce “We made an arrangement that he would divorce me after the marriage. I met him and pleaded with him to divorce me, but he remained adamant,” Amina told police investigators.
She went on to say that the assault made her angry and that as a form of revenge, she lit the house on fire.
A few days prior to the wedding, it was disclosed that Amina had told her parents she was hesitant to proceed with the marriage.
Her parents were adamant that the wedding should proceed despite her concerns, citing the distribution of invitation cards as a point of no return.
